The Edmonton Oilers selected a tall right shot defenceman in the sixth round of the 2024 Draft and may have nabbed him from the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Albin Sundin, an overage player from the Swedish Pro League, has been ranked as the Oilers 18th best prospect by Bruce Curlock. He was invited to the Leafs development camp last summer, a sign the team was interested in him, but the Oilers selected 7 slots before the Leafs were up next to pick.

Sundin is described as an adept two-way player, with great size and praised specifically for his defensive play. He had an interesting year bouncing between the Swedish Professional league and minor leagues, and finishing with a strong playoff run at the highest level in Sweden with Frolunda HC. At Leafs development camp, assistant General Manager Haley Wickenheiser mentioned Albin as a talented player that went under the radar.

Of course, any time a prospect with the name Sundin is brought up with the Leafs, questions of relation to franchise legend Mats Sundin were raised. Albin is not related to Mats, but his father Ronnie Sundin was a longtime veteran of Swedish Professional Hockey.

The Oilers may have nabbed an interesting prospect late in the sixth round that has real potential to play NHL games. His size and defensive ability was leaned on in Swedish Playoff hockey, perhaps it will translate the same way in North America.
