The Oilers acquired Emberson in exchange for Cody Ceci in a trade with the San Jose Sharks this offseason.
Emberson will be eligible to sign a contract extension on January 1st, and on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman said he believes that a new contract could come right as the new year rolls in.
It's interesting to hear Friedman even qualify that the Oilers losing Broberg and Holloway to offer sheets last season may spur them to be more pro-active in signing Emberson.
After a bit of a rocky start in Edmonton, Emberson seems to be fitting in nicely on the third pair defence and penalty kill.
Being only 24 years old too, he's got lots of development and quality hockey ahead of him. In 64 career NHL games, Emberson has only 1 goal, 14 points, and a -9 on ice rating.
It would be the smart decision to lock up Emberson now to a contract with some term. Oilers analyst Alan Mitchell of the Athletic suggested a 2-3 year contract for between $2-3M.
The Oilers could also perhaps afford to overpay slightly, considering the salary cap could increase by more than $20M in the next two years. If Emberson has a quality playoff, his asking price will increase significantly.
Emberson was initially billed as a breakout player candidate when he came to the Oilers, and while expectations may have tempered a bit, he's still a quality young player with a future in this team. Stan Bowman should be ready to put pen to paper on a new contract January 1st.
More details and analysis to come.
