The Oilers were already over the salary cap and into LTIR spending before the signing of Klingberg, after the team called up Noah Philp.
Oilers insiders suggested this was a very temporary move, and that a roster move would come soon to get the team back under the salary cap.
The signing of Klingberg put the Oilers at 24 contract slots, one over the maximum of 23. The easiest decision here will be to waive defenceman Josh Brown, but the team will likely have another roster move coming.
The Oilers want to accrue as much cap space as possible. According to PuckPedia, if Edmonton remains over the cap and in their LTIR spending, Klingberg's cap hit will actually cost the team more.
The Oilers have been running with a thin roster all season for this reason, and they may try to stick to the plan now. This would mean Edmonton could send down another player - with candidates being Noah Philp, Derek Ryan, and Troy Stecher. 2 players would have to be sent down.
Noah Philp is a promising young centreman recently called up and getting a run to prove himself ready for the 4th line job in the playoffs.
Troy Stecher has been an extra defender struggling lately as well, and can be replaced by Klingberg entering the lineup.
Derek Ryan, the 37 year old veteran center who's been scratched multiple times this season, could also finally be placed on waivers.
If that's the case, hopefully he'll still be able to clear, and stay in the Oilers organization in leadership role.
The Oilers are in the home stretch of evaluating all options for their team before making an impact trade at this year's deadline. However, this would be a very hard decision to send down three players for cap space. It's possible only one or two is sent down.
With the Stanley Cup feeling so close to this year's Oilers, the team should be all-in to improve everywhere.
