It's fortunate the Oilers were able to keep Klingberg at just $1M in salary, and there was a possibility that the bonuses on the contract would affect next year's cap, but the Oilers have avoided that with a single signing bonus this year.
All in, Klingberg's cap hit for this season included pro-rated salary and bonuses will be $1.7M.
NHL insider Darren Dreger reported the terms of Klingberg's contract, including the $350K signing bonus.
The signing bonus will be charged this year, avoiding any complications or penalties for next season.
Thankfully, Klingberg's bonus only being $350K should be a very manageable number for the Oilers. Signing Klingberg to a contract for this little carries almost no risk for the team, who can bury the deal to take a minuscule cap penalty.
It's a far cry from the multi-million dollar bonus for Connor Brown's contract last year. Even if Klingberg's bonuses are for hitting a games played benchmark, the team should be comfortable with that risk.
In his prime, John Klingberg was a premier offensive defenceman in the NHL. Known for his skillful passing, offensive awareness, and thunderous shot from the blue line, he once put up a career high of 67 points from the back end.
However, his defensive play has always been a weakness, and that was exacerbated by playing through his hip injuries the last few seasons.
Klingberg may not need much time to get up to speed, as he's been skating with a junior team for some time now. It's possible that after just a few practices, he gets into the lineup.
Hopefully Klingberg's rehab has helped him recover his skating to bring back some defensive talent. On the Oilers, if he can find his offensive success at all again, his puck moving skills may directly with their elite forward talent.
