Since the recent signing of Leon Draisaitl to his eight-year $112 million deal, speculation has intensified on what McDavid's next deal will be as the notion of cap percentage is what drives the elite players to their new deals.
The maximum amount a player can ask in terms of cap percentage is 20%. Many feel that if McDavid were to ask for that number the Oilers would have no issue giving him the amount which would fall between 18 and $19 million per season.
Friedman feels that McDavid will re sign with the Oilers but not at that number. He feels the number will be lower as McDavid would not want to compromise the Oilers ability two signed players to help them win the Stanley Cup.
The expectation is that McDavid will seek for 16 to 16.5 million per season over eight years which could equate to a similar value to Draisaitl deal if the salary cap rises to near $100 million Over the next couple of seasons. This would make him the highest paid player in the NHL at that time which has been an ongoing arms race between all the elite players over the past several years.
I feel that the Oilers will re sign McDavid if he feels he can win with the team long term and it's safe to say that the Oilers would give McDavid whatever he wants when it's time to re sign.
Oilers fans will have to wait till the end of this coming season for the Oilers and McDavid to begin contract extension negotiations as per the CBA rules.
