According to a new report from NHL insider David Pagnotta, the Oilers and the Maple Leafs are emerging as the top two candidates to land veteran forward Scott Laughton at the trade deadline.

With the Oilers and Leafs as the top two teams interested in Laughton, they'll have to compete against each other with their asset packages to acquire him from the Flyers. According to multiple sources, the Oilers and the Flyers could be working on a much bigger trade involving multiple pieces, potentially even including Jack Campbell. At the Oilers last game against the Kings, a Flyers scout was present.

Acquiring a depth Center in Laughton would make some sense for the Oilers and make them a better team, but it's more likely that they'd prefer a top six winger like Konecny instead. However if he isn't available for trade and Laughton could be part of a trade package that frees the Oilers from Campbell's contract, that would be an incredible trade. With Carter Hart away from the team indefinitely, the Oilers are in need of a goaltender long term.

Laughton is now a 29 year old third line Center type player, who brings defensive responsibility and a gritty style of play. In 53 games this season, Laughton has just 6 goals and 21 points. He is signed to a good value contract, with this year and two more remaining at a manageable $3M.

With the trade deadline now less than a month away, discussions around trades will really be heating up. Strap in Oilers fans!
