The Oilers acquired Perreault from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade for defenceman Noel Hoefenmayer in the month of December.
Perreault's prospect value had been sliding in Montreal, and he'd been dumped down to the ECHL when the Oilers acquired him. Now back in the AHL, Perreault is scoring just below a point per game pace in his first 9 games.
Oilers prospect expert Bruce Curlock has raised the recent success of Perreault, indicating there's still some promise in him as a prospect despite being dumped by the Habs.
The Oilers were very smart to pounce on a deal for a player like Perreault, a player with recent high draft pedigree that's fallen out of favour with his current team.
Perreault was drafted 27th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2020, and has even already played one NHL game. If the Oilers can nurse his confidence back up, perhaps they can save his development.
Right after being moved to the AHL in the Anaheim Ducks system, Perreault was scoring decently - once recording 37 points in 55 games in the 2021-22 season. His production has fallen off since then, and his recent streak with the Condors is his highest scoring pace since then.
The Oilers gave up a decent depth defenceman in Noel Hoefenmayer, but may have got a great reclamation project with Perrault.
Hopefully he continues to develop in the Oilers system, and perhaps even reach the NHL level once again.
