The idea of a goaltending trade has been raised multiple times this season as the Oilers are a cup contending team with bottom 10 goaltending results.
In his latest article for the Athletic, Oilers analyst Alan Mitchell briefly raised the potential of Jonathan Quick being in play for the Edmonton Oilers.
At 38 years old on an expiring contract, Jonathan Quick would come at a very cheap price and contract value of $1.275M. However, there's concerns that his best days are behind him, as well as his No-Trade Clause.
If the New York Rangers really do implode for the rest of the season and end up as sellers at the deadline, Quick would be a fantastic option for the Oilers.
Edmonton would still primarily be running with Stuart Skinner, but in the event of injury or that one goalie loses their level of play, there could be a playoff veteran backup option on the bench.
Quick has started 791 games in his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights, and New York Rangers.
He won two Stanley Cups with the Kings, and while his performance did tail off at the end of his tenure in LA, Quick has bounced back. In the last two seasons with New York, Quick has a .911 and .907 save percentage respectively. He does have quality hockey left.
There's also the issue of his 20 team no-trade clause. It's possible he doesn't want to play in Edmonton, but many players are reportedly taking the Oilers off their no-trade lists hoping for a chance at a Stanley Cup alongside Connor McDavid.
If Quick comes at a low trade cost and is willing to come to Edmonton by the trade deadline, it could be an impactful move to strengthen the biggest weakness of the team. It may give Oilers fans a reason to trade the Rangers season, and hope they fall out of the playoff race.
