Christian Fischer is not a big scorer, although he has increased his offensive output this season with eight goals, seven assists in 44 games. He is mostly used on the third or fourth lines as a grinding, tough forward.
He is a vital cog to the penalty killing unit and forechecks with the best of them. His reasonable cap hit of $1.13 million could attract GM Ken Holland to pick up the phone and see what Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong wants in a prospective trade.
Fischer stands 6'-2", 214 pounds and has a physicality that the Oilers could use. His defensive prowess could really help the Oilers, who can score with the best of them, but have trouble stopping their opponents. They are 20th in the league with an average of 3.26 goals allowed per game.
With so many offensive forwards like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl scoring at will, the defence is lacking. That's where Fischer could shine if he was added to the Edmonton roster.
A suggested trade could involve controversial Oilers forward, Jesse Puljujarvi who was recently scratched. It is certain that Holland wants to gain some cap space and Puljujarvi's $3 million cap hit could be a good starting point.
It may do Puljujarvi some good to go to a smaller market where there's no players named McDavid or Draisaitl. He needs a new start and he has size, which Armstrong seems to covet.
As the trade deadline on March 3rd approaches, we shall see if the Oilers make a trade to acquire Fischer. He seems like a good fit in Edmonton, and he'd be with a playoff team too.
