Nathan MacKinnon earned the honour of being the highest paid player in NHL history this summer, with an annual average of $12.6 million, earning more then Connor McDavid and many other superstars throughout the league.

One player in need of a new contract is Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs superstar who has only gotten better since his arrival in Toronto and will be demanding a lot more earnings throughout new contract negotiations coming up.

Matthew has reportedly wanted to be the highest paid player in the league, but news reveals he wants more then just that...

Nick Kypreos stated Matthews is not just looking to make more then MacKinnon, but he's looking to be the NHL's highest paid player by a large amount.

The Maple Leafs already have Nylander, Marner, Rielly and Tavares all holding hefty contracts, and without trading away one of those players as read above, they'll likely be unable to sign Matthews for his asking price, which you won't believe..

Kypreos stated the following:

Auston Matthews is looking for an 8 year, $15M AAV extension on his next contract. Per, Nick Kypreos.

Kypreos says the Leafs won't simply "hand it over" to Matthews, and contract negotiations will last a while. Kypreos also mentioned the longer the two sides go without an extension, the trade talks surrounding William Nylander will get stronger.

This may be the downfall of the Toronto Maple Leafs, before it even started..
