If you're battling for a playoff spot, it is a good idea to be defensively sound on the back-check.

Last night the Edmonton Oilers played the Vegas Golden Knights and thankfully it wasn't an elimination game, but it goes without being said, plays 200 feet. Evander Kane went and surprised everyone with this play.

Here you can see Evander Kane abandoning Stuart Skinner to Nicolas Roy who picked up his own rebound in front of the net, ending the game in OT 4-3. One of the best Oilers this season and he skates behind the net?!

Jay Rosehill followed up with commentary on Kane's lack of backchecking and how terrible of a follow-through it was.

How is Evander Kane going to justify his lack of tenacity in front of his own goalie for that goal? Rosehill was right to call him out as the regular season will be ending soon, teams and players will be looking to solidify line combos, and move rookies in to experiment, and how is that not a blemish on his record with the Oilers so far?

It should go without being said, he could've made multiple moves to save Skinner from Roy, but that play in particular is troubling.
