Edmonton Oilers general manager, Ken Holland, worked alongside Mike Babcock for a decade during their time with the Detroit Red Wings. As general manager and coach, they achieved one Stanley Cup win and secured a playoff spot every year for ten consecutive seasons.

Controversy surrounding Babcock's coaching tenure with the Red Wings did not surface for quite some time, as winning often overshadowed these issues. However, after leaving Detroit and spending four years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, news began to circulate across the league. Several players spoke out about the questionable tactics employed by Babcock, which frequently crossed ethical boundaries.

Recently, there has been a peculiar turn of events in Babcock's career, with his abrupt departure from the Columbus Blue Jackets. He cited the growing controversy as the reason for his decision to step away. During the opening of the Oilers' training camp, reporters asked Holland for his thoughts on Babcock's situation. His response offered intriguing insights and surprising comments.

"I don't really talk to anybody; I just know what the media is saying," Holland stated. "I guess my main sentiment would be disappointment. I'm disappointed for everybody involveddisappointed for Mike, for the organization, and for myself. Mike and I worked closely for a decade, and our wives were good friends during that time. However, when you part ways, you tend to go in separate directions. We had a great working relationship. Despite what the media reports, I don't possess much more information. My primary feeling is one of disappointmentfor Mike and everyone else."

Reflecting on past rumours about Babcock's coaching methods, Holland shared his perspective.

"During my tenure in Detroit with Mike Babcock, we had a 23-man roster, and opinions varied. Some players in that locker room didn't have a favourable view of the coach, while others remained indifferent."

In my view, it appears highly unlikely that Babcock will secure another NHL head coaching job after this tumultuous period. It seems that he is unwilling or unable to adapt to the changing landscape of coaching in the 21st-century NHL.
