Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland had been trying to trade away one specific forward since last years NHL draft to free up cap space, that forward is 6-foot-4 Jesse Puljujarvi, who has not lived up to the 4th overall draft pick potential.
Puljujarvi carries a $3m+ cap hit, and with the Oilers in hopes to make the most out of Connor McDavid in his prime, Puljujarvi had to be moved to make cap space in order for Ken Holland to make a deal.
Puljujarvi was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a prospect who is currently not NHL eligible, Ken Holland made a great deal as he did not retain any of Puljujarvi's salary.
Puljujarvi is unable to go to Carolina right now, and has already missed his 'first game' with the Hurricanes due to immigration visa issues, but the Oilers have offered Puljujarvi to stay in Edmonton and practice until then. Which is until Tuesday, four days away.
Will say, pretty good of the Oilers to let Puljujarvi keep skating while he gets his Visa stuff sorted post-trade. Don't know if it's a requirement, but if it's not it's certainly a nice gesture.
Puljujarvi has an appointment Monday to get work visa worked out and will join Hurricanes Tuesday in Montreal
