Matthew Tkachuk thought he was going to be taken by The Oilers
Matthew Tkachuk's career has seen significant progress in the current season as he finally made it to the Stanley Cup Finals as a part of the Florida Panthers team.
Tkachuk was previously a part of the Calgary Flames before being traded in a blockbuster deal.
The Flames drafted him and is the son of former St. Louis Blues Star Keith Tkachuk.
Tkachuk's brother is also a player in the league, currently playing for Ottawa.
At the draft, Tkachuk anticipated being selected as the third pick by the Edmonton Oilers, but Pierre-Luc Dubois was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets instead.
The Oilers then picked Jesse Puljujarvi as the fourth pick, causing Tkachuk to slide past Vancouver and ultimately be selected by Calgary.
Tkachuk's strong performance in the London Knights organization, where he earned 107 points, made him a potential pick for the Oilers.
However, Dubois' selection at the third pick threw everyone, including Tkachuk, off course.
