McDavid, Matthews, Gretzky & More all receive ban from gambling ads
Starting February 2024, Ontario is set to prohibit online gambling commercials featuring celebrity endorsements, aiming to safeguard children and youth from potential harm.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) introduced the ban in response to mounting criticism from advocates, parents, and sports fans who expressed concerns about the influence of such ads, especially during prominent NHL broadcasts. The decision aligns with AGCO's commitment to prioritize the protection of vulnerable demographics and promote a safer media environment.
As a result, advertisements featuring renowned athletes like Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, and Wayne Gretzky will no longer be permitted in Ontario after February. This move underscores the province's dedication to responsible advertising practices and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
