In today's NHL, contract negotiations seem to dominate the headlines. Recently, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews announced their agreement on a four-year extension worth $53 million. When factoring in this year and the additional four-year extension, Matthews is set to remain a Maple Leaf for another five seasons.

While this news undoubtedly delights Leafs fans, Elliot Friedman of the "32 Thoughts" podcast has introduced the idea of a potential new contract for Mitch Marner.

Marner, who has been closely associated with Matthews throughout their time as Maple Leafs, could potentially be in line for a similar raise when he eventually negotiates a new deal. Friedman pondered, "What figure will Marner aim for next?

Given his proximity to Matthews, who signed for an annual average value (AAV) of $11.634 million, Marner's value surged to approximately $11 million. Now that Matthews commands $13.25 million, what should Marner's new number be? Could it be around $13.249999 million?"

Currently, in the final two years of his $11.6 million per season contract, Marner will become eligible for a contract extension after the conclusion of this season. Additionally, the Maple Leafs are actively working on securing William Nylander's services for the foreseeable future, as his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

Speculation abounds regarding Nylander's contract expectations and the Maple Leafs' willingness to meet them.
