Vincent Desharnais, a defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers, has experienced a career filled with uncertainty. Drafted in the seventh round, 183rd overall, during the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Desharnais has had stints with the Wichita Thunder in the ECHL and the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers' AHL affiliate.

Over the past three seasons, Desharnais has patiently bided his time as a regular player with the Condors. However, during the 2022-2023 season, the Edmonton Oilers sought a change on their blue line and decided to give Desharnais an opportunity.

As a 26-year-old rookie, Desharnais was thrilled to showcase his skills. During his tenure with the Oilers, he played 36 games, recorded five assists, accumulated 31 penalty minutes, and boasted a +15 rating.

His contributions were instrumental in securing a playoff spot for the team, which led to a two-round playoff run where he contributed two assists and accumulated eight penalty minutes.

Despite his efforts, the statistics may not appear impressive. Additionally, with new players emerging from the minors for the upcoming training camp in September, it remains uncertain whether Desharnais can secure a permanent spot on the team's blue line or potentially be assigned back to the Condors for another year.

Desharnais is under a two-way contract between the Condors and the Oilers. He signed a two-year deal worth 1.525 million dollars, set to expire after this season. His salary cap hit amounts to $762,500.

Vincent Desharnais needs to elevate his performance and present a compelling case to continue as part of the Oilers roster next year.
