It's always in the best interest of an NHL organization to provide their prospects with as much opportunity as possible to succeed and showcase their talent. Draft picks play a vital role in a team's development and salary cap management. The hope is that the drafted player will live up to expectations and become a valuable part of the team.

The Edmonton Oilers have extended this opportunity to defensive prospect Philip Broberg. The 22-year-old Swedish defenseman, standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 212 pounds, was selected as the 8th overall pick in the first round during the 2019 entry draft. While he was initially considered a surefire addition to the Oilers' defensive core, he has yet to consistently secure a spot in the lineup.

To help Broberg reach his potential, the Oilers have paired him with Mattias Ekholm, a defenseman of similar calibre. This partnership is designed to provide Broberg with the best possible chance to make a difference and align himself with one of the better defensemen in the Western Conference.

This upcoming season is a make-or-break moment for Broberg. It could unfold in two ways: he might become the defenseman the Oilers have been hoping for, earning a permanent spot among their top six defensemen, or he could be made available as a trade asset in March to bolster the team as they prepare for a championship run.

General manager Ken Holland has opted to retain the majority of the team he assembled last year, with 20 out of 23 players returning. There's a palpable sense that this season represents unfinished business for the Oilers, following their disappointment in the playoffs.

Only time will tell if this squad can deliver and secure their 6th Stanley Cup, marking the first of the Connor McDavid era.
