There is a challenge with Erik Karlsson's contract, which is quite substantial at an $11 million AAV cap hit. This makes it difficult for most teams to afford. With the salary cap remaining stagnant over the past three years, teams have been put in a tough position.

Even teams that are able to afford Karlsson's contract, such as the Sharks, are unwilling to do so.

Karlsson has expressed interest in being traded to a contender rather than staying on for a rebuild.

However, discussions between the Oilers and Sharks regarding Karlsson did not result in any significant progress, as the Sharks were unwilling to retain a portion of his contract.

Mike Grier was only willing to retain 18-20% of Karlsson's contract, which is not enough for Holland.

It appears that in order for Karlsson to be traded, he may need to consider reducing his contract by 40-50%.

We will have to wait and see if Grier changes his stance on this matter. If not, it looks like Karlsson will remain with the Sharks.
