BREAKING: New Jersey Devils fire head coach and announce replacement
Moments ago, the New Jersey Devils announced that the team has fired head coach Lindy Ruff. In the interim, former Canucks coach Travis Green will take over as the new coach.
The decision comes as the Devils have seriously underperformed this season after finally making the playoffs last year. They currently sit eight points out of a playoff spot, and it's looking more like they'll disappoint this year and miss out entirely. Ruff signed a two year contract extension with the Devils at the beginning of this season, so the decision to fire him doesn't come lightly from ownership.
The problem with the Devils this year arguably hasn't been the coaching, but untimely injuries to core players and abysmal goaltending through the year. Regardless, the team will have plenty of work to do this offseason to improve, especially in net, and make another run for the playoffs next season.
