Pedestrians in Calgary have noticed signs marking «Scotia Place» in downtown Calgary.
Even the SaddleDome is technically called the Scotiabank SaddleDome as their corporate sponsor, but the new building will lose the unique moniker and will change the entire skyline for the City of Calgary. The name Scotia Place' is so much weaker than the SaddleDome. The change in names will really mirror that of the Toronto Blue Jays rebranding from the SkyDome to the Rogers Center.
For a building that has been part of the city's identity for so long, there will be some sentimentality in the demolition of the SaddleDome, but it's a much needed change. Plenty of aspects of the arena built in 1983 have simply deteriorated past modern standards, including the dressing rooms, media catwalks, and the concourse.
According to sources covering Calgary City Hall, a more detailed announcement of the plans for the Flames new arena could be revealed as soon as today, along with renderings of what the new Scotia Place will look like. The arena is expected to open in 2028.
It should be an exciting time for Flames fans and the City of Calgary, who desperately needed this new arena. The two NHL teams in Alberta could soon have arguably the best arenas in the entire league.
