The new arena will aim to open in 2028, and will provide a much needed update on the aging SaddleDome built in 1983. The new Scotia Place will be a world class event center facility, much more versatile than the current arena. The Scotia Place will feature a new entertainment district, multiple rinks for the community, and of course, an updated home for the Calgary Flames.
The Saddledome was the second oldest arena behind Madison Square Garden in the NHL, and had more than a few features in desperate need of an update. The locker rooms for even the home team were below NHL standards, the catwalk to the media booths were a harrowing experience, and there were even arena limitations that stopped major artists from playing concerts in Calgary. All that will be rectified with a new world class arena by the looks of it.
The Oilers already have one of the more recent and best arenas in the NHL with Rogers Place, and now it looks like Calgary will join the ranks of best NHL arenas too. Hopefully, the Flames can time the roster rebuild to be emerging at just the right time for their new arena to open, debuting a new era for the team.
