Now, fans and the league will turn their attention to the next NHL expansion team - and considering that Arizona is a relocation, the league will still want to add another team fairly soon. A second team in the greater Toronto area has long rumoured, and now, a politician is looking to make it happen.
A Mayoral candidate for the city of Mississauga, Ontario has pledged in his campaign to draft a bid for an NHL expansion team. Mississauga's population is quickly approaching 1M people, and as a hockey hotbed in southern Ontario, there's little doubt the team would be extremely successful financially.
The mayoral candidate is actually Peter McCallion, son of former longtime mayor Hazel McCallion. He's also even teased the name of the Mississauga Hurricanes as a tribute to his mother's nickname. Clearly, he forgot about the NHL team in Carolina with the same name.
According to reports from Elliotte Friedman earlier in the year, the NHL is expected to pursue expansion teams rapidly - potentially going up to 34 teams by 2030. Whether it be in Mississauga, Quebec City, or plenty of other places, it'd be nice to have another NHL team in Canada. Our hardcore fans deserve it.
