Shattenkirk had been looking for a new NHL team during this summer as he felt that he still had some hockey left in him. But it was clear that the NHL had moved on, and he currently remained as a unrestricted free agent.
He was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche back in 2007, first round 14 pick overall. Since arriving in the NHL in 2010, he had played for the Avalanche, Blues, Capitals, Rangers, Lightning, Ducks and his last stop was the Boston Bruins back in 2023-2024.
He played in 952 career games, scoring 100 and three goals with 381 assists for 484 points and had 544 penalty minutes. He was always a fixture on every team's top 4 defenders and always was a factor in their power play as he had 210 power play points.
As for accolades, he was a Stanley Cup champion when he played for the Tampa Bay Lightning back in 2019 -2020.
There was chatter throughout the offseason that Shattenkirk had interest in the Oilers which in turn nothing occurred, and the Oilers had moved on.
No plans have been mentioned by Shattenkirk of remaining in the NHL in some form or capacity or walking away from the game altogether and just becoming a spectator.
The Oilers, meanwhile, have several tough opponents that they're facing including the Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild and the Vegas Golden Knights between now and Saturday December 14th. This will be a true test of the team as they have seen success as of late.
