A burst appendix is an incredibly time sensitive and terrifying medical event. It's incredibly fortunate that Gibson was able to get the urgent care that he needed. It's nearly unbelievable to think that after such a personal emergency, Gibson will be back competing in professional games relatively soon.
Drafted by the Ducks back in 2011, Gibson is now 31 years old and has been the starting goalie for the team over a decade. Through a majority of his career he's been one of the more elite goalies in hockey. In 477 career games, Gibson has a very good .910 save percentage.
As the Ducks have been non-competitive for several years now, Gibson has been perpetually floated in trade rumours. If he ever wants to compete for a Stanley Cup in his career, a trade may need to come soon. Gibson is only under contract for three more seasons at $6.4M a year. His salary is the major reason a contending team hasn't traded for him over the last few years, as his save percentage has dropped with age.
If he stays on track with the original timeline, Gibson should be on track to return to play in early November at the latest. Out thoughts are with Gibson hoping the best in his recovery from this scary situation, and in the upcoming season. The regular season opener is now less than two weeks away!
