Moments ago, news broke that the Edmonton Oilers have signed goalie Calvin Pickard to a two year contract extension for $1M each year.

It's a fantastic low-risk signing for the 32 year old veteran goalie. Pickard stepped up as a great backup goalie for the Oilers this season, playing 23 games and posting a .909 save percentage. In the playoffs, Pickard stepped up yet again when Stuart Skinner struggled, and played his best hockey when it mattered the most. The team clearly trusts Pickard as a quality backup, and now they'll have him penciled in for the next two seasons.

With Stuart Skinner also taking the Oilers to a Stanley Cup Final and playing his best hockey when it mattered most, Edmonton now seems comfortable with their goaltending duo for the first time in near decades. The Oilers elite team only ever needed league average goaltending, and now they've got two quality goalies under contract for the foreseeable future.

After 142 games played with 6 different teams, Pickard is finally getting some stability and reward for his stable presence in net. As long as Pickard can keep up his health and solid play in net, this will be a great value signing for the Oilers.
