All throughout the past season, the Oilers were linked to have signing the Edmonton born forward Jake DeBrusk in free agency. Now, DeBrusk pivoted to sign with the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks have signed DeBrusk to a seven year contract for an annual value of $5.5M. The deal comes just minutes after the Oilers announced a signing of a top six forward themselves, signing Victor Arvidsson to a two year contract for $4M each season.
After losing Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov to the Boston Bruins earlier today in free agency, this move will be their biggest to plug the holes lost by their playoff rentals. In addition, the Canucks signed another former Bruin Danton Heinen.
The Oilers still won't be done after signing Arvidsson either, but losing out on DeBrusk is a slight disappointment for fans hoping for the hometown kid. Arvidsson came in with lower term and salary too, and may be just as good of a player as DeBrusk. So far, the Arvidsson signing looks like a home run for the Oilers.
