ESPN analyst Greg Wyshynski appeared on the Jeff Marek show and made a shocking statement that he has information Connor McDavid may not re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers.
ESPN Analyst claims Connor McDavid contract is not guaranteed
However, Greg Wyshynski said his informed speculation is that McDavid isn't at all guaranteed to stay in Edmonton, and the next few playoff years may decide his fate.
»I think that the next couple of playoff seasons for the Oilers, whilst Connor McDVid remains under contract are very, very important. I don't necessarily believe anymore that Leon signing is a harbinger for Connor signing. I don't think it's guaranteed.
- Greg Wyshynski
With so many personal signs pointing to McDavid staying in Edmonton - including Draisaitl's deal, Lauren's businesses, or Jeff Jackson being his former agent - it's rightfully looked practically guaranteed that McDavid will stay.
Wyshynski may be completely out to lunch here. He mentioned the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers as two teams who would make a push to sign McDavid, failing to recognize they're two declining contenders who may not be competitive in a few years.
Obviously, Oilers fans responded with vitriol to Wyshynki's report, insisting that the captain will be in Edmonton for his whole career.
»Leon signed a max year deal to stay in the NHLs most northernest outpost knowing full well his best friend is leaving town. Ooooooooofffff Wysh. Swing and a Miss.
- Oilers fan
Boston and Rangers? Come on man. Why would he go to worse teams.
Sorry Greg, this is very silly. There is not one single sign that he's not gonna sign long term.
It's probably an ignorant and inflammatory report from the American media. However, the Oilers have some different stars that are entirely driven by winning together with this long-time core.
Draisaitl, in his contract extension announcement, proudly claimed he was loyal to the oil.
Connor McDavid is the captain of one of the greatest teams in NHL history, and can cement himself among the greatest in the game while playing on the Oilers next to Draisaitl for his entire career, in the city he's put down roots in. He's not leaving.
