The Oilers looked like they were robbed of an extended 5 on 3 last night on a puck over glass penalty, and now a former NHL referee is explaining the non call.

Former Ref and current ESPN Analyst Dave Jackson took to social media to explain the reason for the non call was because the puck left Stenlund's stick after the blue line.

To help clarify any confusion, a puck that is still in contact with the blade of the stick when it breaks the plane, is not a penalty. The rule book does not mention initial contact with the puck. Refs got the call right.

Stenlund began shooting the puck squarely on the Panthers side of the line, but the rule states that it's determined by where the player releases the puck, and Stenlund was right on the border. This penalty isn't reviewable using replay, so the referees just had to meet on the ice to discuss the call.

Referee says Panthers player released puck after blue line, and no call was correct

Jackson continued replying to fans on X detailing the explanation of the call. According to the NHL, a shot does not become a shot until the puck has fully left the stick of the player, which is the determining factor in this penalty.

A shot is not a shot until it's no longer on the stick therefore if it leaves the stick over the blue line it's no penalty. If contact occurs exclusively inside zone, it's a penalty. It reads very straightforward to me but I understand the confusion for some fans.
- Dave Jackson

Still, many fans are adamant that this should have been a penalty call, especially when it could've given the Oilers an extremely dangerous 5 on 3 powerplay for nearly a full two minutes. Fans were harping on Jackson so hard that he had to tap out, conceding that some fans just can't have their minds changed about this incident.

At the end of the day, the Oilers need to power through the physicality of the Florida Panthers. So far, the Panthers have been able to muck it up with the Oilers enough to snuff out their offence almost entirely. Going from the highest scoring team in the NHL to only scoring 1 goal in 2 games is not a method for success.

With the series shifting back to Edmonton on Thursday night, the Oilers will need to lean on their incredible fans for home ice advantage to take two wins back to Florida, and keep this series close.
