The NHL Department of Player Safety has announced a $2,213 fine against Sam Carrick for a brutal slash to the groin of Panthers defenceman Dmitry Kulikov.

In the final minutes of the game, Carrick was on the ice looking to get a piece of flesh from the Panthers with the score out of reach. Carrick skated by Kulikov and delivered a nasty uppercut slash in between the legs.

For the play, Carrick received a two minute penalty for slashing and a ten minute misconduct, sending him off the ice for the remainder of the game.

Notably, this will be the only supplemental discipline given out for last night's Cup Final game. Draisaitl threw a nasty hit against Barkov, Foegele was ejected for a knee on knee collision, and multiple Panthers players took runs at the Oilers. Still, only Carrick will be fined.

NHL fans react to Player Safety's controversial decisions on Game 2 of Stanley Cup Final

Plenty of hockey fans are livid with the action from Player Safety. Only fining Carrick for this play and ignoring others which seemed much more dangerous and threatening is a strange look for Player Safety, but it isn't new. The only thing consistent about Player Safety is their inconsistency.

With plenty of incidents in last night's game, the Panthers will surely be on the hunt to target some Oilers in game 3, maybe even particularly Leon Draisaitl. Back on home ice with the support of the best fans in the league, the Oilers are going to have to hold their ground, and win both games in Edmonton to keep this series close.
