Berube was long thought to be the favourite for the job in Toronto, and the Leafs moved quickly to sign him. With many other teams across the NHL looking for head coaches, it seems the Leafs decided to act quickly and hire Berube before he was interviewed
elsewhere. According to Seravalli, the Leafs will hold make a formal announcement and hold a press conference shortly.
After the firing of Sheldon Keefe following the Leafs elimination against Boston in the first round yet again, this is part of a major culture shift the Leafs are expected to take. Berube has the reputation of being a no-nonsense old school coach, who does not coddle star players more than depth players.
One of his most legendary moments as the coach of the Blues was calling out his star players directly for playing with no emotion, passion, or real desire to win. For the Maple Leafs, the parallels are easy to see - they're a core of elite players who fail spectacularly in the playoffs every time.
With their core of overpaid players with little to no playoff success, Craig Berube is like a head coach perfectly made for the Maple Leafs. Their star players likely won't like having him around, but their failures are what brought him here. Hopefully, Berube can finally snap this disappointment of a team into shape, and make the Leafs a semi-serious hockey team again.
