Alex Nylander was drafted in the first round, 8th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2016 Draft. He has since shown incredible offensive promise in the AHL, but has never consistently made the jump to the NHL. Last season was his best year yet, scoring 11 goals in just 23 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 125 career NHL games, Alex Nylander has scored 25 goals and 49 points.
Of course as well, he's the brother of star Leafs forward William Nylander. Alex is signed to an AHL contract, so likely won't begin next season on the Leafs roster, but his offensive talent could be a pathway to earning a spot in the bottom six for Toronto. Signing him to a one year contract in the AHL, there's no risk to the deal at all either. If Nylander does get called up to the Leafs, he will need to sign an NHL contract.
Plenty of Leafs fans are ecstatic with the move, if not only for the family connection with William Nylander but also his scoring talent that really began to show in the NHL last year. Who knows, maybe Alex can develop some chemistry with his brother with the Leafs on a line this season!
