In exchange, the Oilers will receive Senators prospect Roby Jarventie and a fourth round draft pick.
Bourgault was previously considered to be the number one prospect of the Edmonton Oilers before the acquisition of Matthew Savoie, but Bourgault's stock has dipped recently. Drafted in the first round by the Oilers in 2021, Bourgault has now played two seasons in the AHL with subpar results. His production actually decreased in his second season, only scoring 8 goals and 20 points in 55 games.
Roby Jarventie is in a similar situation, but produced at a much better rate in a short time with the Senators' AHL team. Drafted 33rd overall by the Senators in 2020, Jarventie has appeared in 7 NHL games, and scored 20 points in 22 AHL games this season.
This trade again seems to have some real foresight on the end of the Oilers and President Jeff Jackson. Many analysts have been hitting the alarm bell about Bourgault's development, and if the Oilers could get a somewhat equal prospect in return, that may be good asset management with a flailing prospect. Jeff Jackson has been on an absolute roll as manager of the Oilers, first making them better this year, and addressing the prospects in the system as well.
