It's always sad to see great players struggle to stay on the ice due to injury, especially when it's a team's captain. Gabriel Landeskog really gave it everything he had for their cup run in 2022, as he hasn't played a game in the two years since. After two years of being expected to return followed by being ruled out for the season, he's revealed that he's going to meet with the media about his future.
With the way things have been going for Landeskog, it wouldn't be surprising to hear him announce his retirement. Landeskog has been battling the same injury since 2020 and has had many surgeries on it. Injuries are somewhat more mild if they're on different parts, but a reoccurring injury on the same body part can be disastrous for a player's career.
Landeskog is an amazing captain, and it sucks to see him not be playing for the Avalanche. After back to back disappointing seasons, it's obvious how much the Avs are missing Landeskog.
It's not for sure that he's going to retire as of right now, but an official announcement is never a good thing. It could be about him making a return to the NHL, which would be a sigh of relief for any hockey fan.
Landeskog is only 31 and has 5 years left on his 7M AAV contract, which has been on the LTIR for two years. This will be a big contract coming back on to the books, while Colorado is already having a tough time managing their money. Hopefully Landeskog can continue playing, as careers cut short for injury are never a good thing no matter what team they play for.
