Originally drafted fourth overall by the Oilers in the 2016 NHL draft, Jesse Puljujarvi's has turned out to be a polarizing player in the league. While he hasn't lived up to the offensive expectations of his draft position, some still believe Puljujarvi is a quality player based on his analytics.

It makes sense then that the Pittsburgh Penguins have now signed Puljujarvi to a professional tryout contract. Now run by Kyle Dubas, the Pens are taking a bet that Puljujarvi can make play-driving contributions on a cheap contract.

It's likely that Puljujarvi will begin his time in the Penguins organization with their AHL affiliate. However, if he can impress with his play at that level, he could earn a full contract and an opportunity with the Penguins.Coming off a double hip surgery in the offseason, Puljujarvi could struggle initially as he gets back to full speed.

After playing most of his career with the Oilers, Puljujarvi was traded to the Hurricanes last year mid-season, and only recorded two points in 17 games. Over his career, he's played 334 games, scoring just 51 goals and 114 points.
