Moments ago, the Edmonton Oilers made a significant roster move. The team has sent defenceman Phillip Broberg to the AHL and is recalling Ben Gleason to fill his role.

Broberg openly requested a trade this week, reportedly unhappy with his playing opportunities. In response, yesterday reports surfaced that the Oilers were shocked by the request, and unwilling to move on from the 22 year old so quickly.

Sending Broberg to the minors will accommodate his request for more playing time - but this is only a temporary solution. Being the team's 8th overall draft pick from 2019, Broberg has high expectations and would likely prefer playing in the NHL consistently. For now however, it's clear that the Oilers would rather continue to develop Broberg within the organization, and try to salvage the value from the first round pick.

The longer Broberg stays in the minor leagues though, the more trade speculation will surround him. Although the team would like to keep him, it could make sense to trade him to bolster their defence or goaltending with veteran presences and help the team fit their present Stanley cup window.
