This morning, the Edmonton Oilers made news across the NHL as reports have surfaced that the team has officially signed Corey Perry. According to several insiders, the contract is essentially complete and will be announced tomorrow. Now, we may know the reason for the delay in the announcement.

Perry's deal is expected to be cheap, but will also include performance bonuses according to Chris Johnston of TSN. However, CapFriendly has also just released a report, saying that the Oilers will also need to make an immediate roster move to afford Perry and make space on their roster.

CapFriendly says that right now, if the Oilers added Perry they'd be over the salary cap, and need to make a move now to clear space. Depending on Perry's salary, this could mean the Oilers have to make a trade. However if Perry's salary is near league minimum, the Oilers may just need to send down their current 7th defenceman, Philip Kemp. This would still leave the team in a decent position for depth as well, still carrying 20 skaters on the roster.

As the signing is to be announced tomorrow, the Oilers will likely announce whatever corresponding roster move is necessary to make the space for Perry to join the Oilers. It's an amazing fit for both Perry and the team, who will provide depth scoring and a pest like presence on a team destined for a long playoff run.
