At the end of the season, Ken Holland is expected to leave his position as Oilers general manager.
At the end of this season, his contract with the Oilers will expire, and he has been rumored to retire. It will be a tough situation again for the Oilers, as they hope to resign Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl as well.
Staois was previously expected to take over once Holland vacated, but since his move to Ottawa, the team has shifted gears.
A name that has been popping up is Dave Gagner, according to Toronto Sun reporter, Steve Simmons.
The Gagners already have a connection to the Oilers, as Dave is the father of Sam Gagner, who is a current forward for the team.
The 58-year-old, however, works for the Wasserman Hockey Agency, the same agency Jeff Jackson left, the CEO of the Oilers. Two players he represents are already on the roster, Connor Brown and Evan Bouchard.
In 2008-2013, Gagner served as director of player development for the Vancouver Canucks. The hiring of Gagner would signal a consistent direction, much like the hiring of Kris Knoblauch, who had never been an NHL GM before.
Jackson in Edmonton and Kent Hughes in Montreal may signal a trend, as many more player agents are being hired as executives in NHL front offices.
