Connor McDavid's Plans On Sign New Contract Revealed By NHL Insiders
Oilers superstar Connor McDavid will be eligible to be re-signed at the end of this hockey season, but he's not expected to sign a new contract right away.
The Captain has been reluctant to comment on entering his contract status and the coming eligibility to re-sign, but recently McDavid said that his only priority on his next deal is to win.
According to new reports from Pierre LeBrun on TSN, McDavid and the Oilers aren't negotiating at all right now, and both sides are comfortable with pushing it to the end of the season.
»We all know that he has one year left on his deal after this season, and the reality is Jeff Jackson said they have not started any type of contract negotiation, or conversation, on that front. He can't sign until July 1st anyway, but it's very similar to the pattern we saw last year with Leon Draisaitl
One thing that Jeff Jackson reiterated is July 1st is not a deadline. Whether an extension can get done on July 1st or later in the summer, so be it. Everyone should calm down in Oiler Nation and realize it will get done when it gets done.
-Pierre LeBrun Insiders Update Oilers Contract Talks with Captain Connor McDavid
McDavid seems to be taking advice from Leon Draisaitl by pushing off all contract talks until the summer to purely focus on hockey during the season.
That's understandable for high end talents like McDavid and Draisaitl who don't want to be distracted by contract talks through the season, and instead be present with their game and their goal of winning the Cup.
Despite the Oilers and McDavjd not engaging in contract talks right now, all signs point toward him re-signing in Edmonton and becoming an Oiler for life.
Draisaitl's massive extension last summer followed the same pattern and was seen as a harbinger for McDavid staying. President Jeff Jackson is McDavid's former agent, so they have that inside connection too. The Oilers captain will be eligible to sign a contract extension July 1st, 2025.
Some hockey fans are deluded into believing that McDavid is itching to jump ship to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but it looks like that's never going to happen. Connor McDavid will be an Oiler for life, and may go down as the greatest player in hockey history.
