In a new German interview, Poner said that the Oilers will need to make an offer that shows they really want Draisaitl quickly, or a deal will not happen at all.
When asked if he believes that a deal will be reached with the Oilers, Poner answered with an emphatic yes'. The Oilers obviously have every intention of re-signing Draisaitl, and will offer him whatever it takes to stay.
Poner also touched upon the fact that Draisaitl has been playing the last eight season on a bargain of a contract for $8.5M, and he's done taking a discount. Draisaitl is looking to be paid fairly, as potentially the highest salary in the NHL - before McDavid's next contract. Draisaitl should be able to fetch at least $13.5M, potentially up to $14M. He'll be turning 30 years old when the next contract begins, so he'll likely be seeking an 8 year term.
With Poner's comments, it's clear the ball is in the Oilers court. As soon as they hire a GM, they need to not play around, and make the fair offer to Leon Draisaitl. Get this contract signed quickly, before the season starts, and the Oilers future looks to be locked in for the foreseeable future. After Draisaitl re-signs, Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard will be right behind him.
