Jackson made it clear that the Oilers need to get younger and need to have their pipeline of prospects flourishing to make the team over the next couple of years. Without a first-round draft pick in the 2024 draft, and the lack of a third and 4th pick Jackson went to work as interim general manager and managed to acquire a first rounder with the 32nd overall choice by selecting Sam O'Reilly from the London Knights.
He also signed Noah Phillip and managed to make a great trade with the Buffalo Sabres by acquiring Matt Savoie for Ryan McLeod and Ty Tullio. These moves are vital to the Oilers as it's been explained that the team is one of the oldest teams in the NHL.
A sign of a great team is that draft picks after the first and second round need to start blossoming on the roster which helps the team control their salary cap and develop and build their own talent. With the recent loss of Dylan Holloway and Phillip Broberg to the St Louis Blues via offer sheet, the Oilers acquired Ty Emberson through the San Jose Sharks at the expense of Cody Ceci who is 25 years old and has more upside to offer.
It remains to be seen on what Jackson and general manager Stan Bowman have in store for the prospects. But with training camp open and both management and coaching staff watching and evaluating it's safe to say several of these prospects could make noise and potentially lock in a roster spot.
