According to the Edmonton Journal, the Edmonton Oilers front office was ranked by the Athletic which put the team well ahead of some Canadian teams especially the Toronto Maple Leafs.
This ranking is measured by 40 NHL executives who give their votes on who has the best front office in the NHL. In their findings, the Oilers were found to be 15th out of 32 which puts them straight down the middle in NHL front offices. The Oilers are currently tied with the Utah hockey club and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Oilers reporter Dave Staples gives his take on why the Oilers may be ranked where they are considering many felt that their offseason was one of the best in the NHL as the team was able to reconfigure the roster an adding several prominent players.
I have a strong suspicion that if the Oilers had signed Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to new contracts at the (low) going rate for Restricted Free Agents that the Oilers would rank in the Top 10 right now, if not the Top 5. But that one major misstep was costly to the franchise, and that's reflected in this voting. Edmonton left itself wide open to the St. Louis raid, first by failing to lock up Broberg and Holloway before the end of the season, then by over-spending in early July 1, leaving little wiggle room to retain Holloway or Broberg.
The top team in the NHL would be the Dallas Stars who had 251 points. Another honorable mention is the Tampa Bay Lightning who has 187 points however it remains to be seen on how the lightning will prevail without former captain Steven Stamkos.
In this ranking, the top Canadian team was the Montreal Canadiens who sat at 11th place with 13 points, then The Jets at 18th, the Canucks at 22nd and the Toronto Maple Leafs at 23rd.
Regardless of the slow start, it's likely the Oilers will find their way and become the team that people expect them to be and what they showed last year.
