The Blues seem intent on continuing to sell off their older stars and shift towards younger players, which could put Schenn on the trading block. Paul Bissonette said he heard that the Oilers were interested in making a move for him, to which Elliotte Friedman confirmed. However, any trade there would be greatly complicated by Schenn's contract.
Schenn would be an unbelievable fit for the Oilers as a veteran third line center and someone who could move up to play on the second line wing at times. He's under contract for five more seasons at $6.5M though, and that would be the biggest obstacle in any acquisition.
Friedman throws cold water on the idea of Schenn to the Oilers for this reason, but it's absolutely not impossible. Any trade that could involve Jack Campbell would free up the cap space to make it work, or the Oilers could pay a premium including picks and prospects to have the Blues retain salary for the remainder of the contract. Having Schenn at a retained number for the next five years could be an incredible asset for the Oilers.
It would be a complex and complicated trade, but it would clearly be an unreal fit for this team. Schenn's hard nosed style, defensive responsibility, and ability to contribute offensively would perfectly match the Oilers needs going into the playoffs. If GM Ken Holland could find a way to make this work, it would be an amazing move.
