Edmonton Oilers looking to ship out World Juniors prospects in trade to improve defence

A new report from the Edmonton Journal suggests the Oilers will be offering World Juniors Prospects Beau Akey and Paul Fischer in trades this season.
Akey was named to Team Canada and Fischer played for Team USA, but neither player saw much ice time for their respective teams.
Oilers Could Be Offering Beau Akey and Paul Fischer in trades to improve defence, per report
The Oilers have a desire to make an impact trade to help them win the Stanley Cup, but they don't have many assets to offer teams.
For the 2025 draft, the Oilers don't have a first round pick. They could potentially make a deal with their 2nd and 3rd round picks, or their first rounder from next year, but the prospect pipeline needs more players.
Their two top prospects in Matthew Savoie and Sam O'Reilly should be considered untouchable as well, unless a major deal comes along.
Insider Jim Matheson with the Edmonton Journal suggested a hockey trade involving two prospects that are far away from making the NHL - Akey and Fischer.
Maybe young defencemen Beau Akey (junior in Barrie) and Paul Fischer (Notre Dame) are in play for a veteran defenceman at the deadline
Beau Akey is a 19 year old right shot defender that was drafted by the Oilers in the second round in 2023, considered to be the team's best defence prospect.
Paul Fischer was acquired from the St. Louis Blues in a minor trade after the Broberg and Holloway offer sheets, and is an under the radar prospect.
Oilers could deal World Juniors Prospects for Penguins Defenceman Marcus Pettersson
Matheson connected the Oilers to trading for Marcus Pettersson of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and earlier reported the price to acquire him would be a 2nd round draft pick and a prospect.
If that's the case, the Oilers can surely put together a quality trade offer to the Pittsburgh Penguins with Akey, Fischer, and their second round pick for Marcus Pettersson.
The 28 year old Swedish defenceman is under contract for the rest of this season at $4.025M, but hopefully could be re-signed.
He's a shut down defender that had a breakout year last season with 30 points and an impressive +28 on ice rating.
This would be a great deal for the Edmonton Oilers, giving up two prospects who won't help them win now for a player who could fit seamlessly in the lineup.
All the foundations for an Oilers trade is clearly here - it may just be a matter of time before General Manager Stan Bowman makes his move.
