During the first shift of the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, McDavid jammed his ankle directly into the boards with speed. Most reports indicated the primary concern for McDavid was a high-ankle sprain, which can vary in recovery time from a few weeks to a few months. It's very fortunate that McDavid will only miss a relatively short amount of time.
McDavid has arrived back in Edmonton to begin rehabbing his injury while the Oilers continue their road trip. According to sources yesterday, McDavid is even flying in his own team of personal trainers to augment the work of the Oilers staff. They'll be employing every possible measure they have to get the superstar back on the ice as soon as possible.
For now, the Oilers called up forwards Noah Philp and Drake Caggiula to serve as depth with McDavid out. Edmonton already got off to a tough start this year, so they need to be able to stay afloat in the standings while McDavid is unavailable. The Oilers will be looking to their supporting cast of star players to really step up now.
Anytime Connor McDavid goes down with an injury, the Edmonton Oilers will be nearing disaster mode. Thankfully they avoided the worst case scenario for his recovery timeline, but still, it will be a tall task for the Oilers to remain competitive without him in the lineup.
