Edmonton Oilers reportedly show interest New York Islanders centerman

Over the past couple of days, several names have been linked to the Oilers including Brayden Schenn of the St Louis Blues and now Pageau.

Pageau has one year remaining on his contract which holds a cap hit of $5,000,000 AAV. It's unlikely that general manager Lou Lamoriello will take on retention for his salary as he will seek to recuperate the full salary cap as the Islanders may be poised for a retool soon.

The 32-year-old has had a solid season as he has bounced back from his previous year where he had scored ten goals with 17 assists for 27 points in 52 games and has had a career high in faceoff wins of 59.7%.

His style of play is exactly what the Oilers need as he has a game where he tends to shut down his opponents and play defensive style hockey along with being one of the best penalty killers.

General manager Stan Bowman has stated that a bottom 6 forward that can offer secondary scoring it penalty killing will be vital to help put the Oilers over the top.

If the Oilers feel that Pageau is the right fit for the organization, the team does have some draft picks and prospects they could offer the Islanders.

It's likely that Lamoriello will ask for a roster player and a good draft pick, and the Oilers will have to agree as they are currently right up against the salary cap.

It's going to be a fascinating time for the Oilers and the rest of the NHL as the air of change appears to be blowing throughout the league which could result into a very active trade deadline.

Over the coming weeks, Oilers fans will see if the team feels they're good enough as is or make the changes that are necessary to help put them over the top and go on another long playoff run.
