Randy Gregg and Craig MacTavish were briefly brought out to the ice before the game to introduce this year's Hall of Fame inductees before puck drop. Usually, teams will have these ceremonies before the game begins, but both Oilers cup champions left fairly quickly and the game began on time.
After the game, the Oilers were able to extensively honour Craig MacTavish and Dr. Randy Gregg. Both the centreman and the defenceman won multiple Stanley cups with the Oilers in the 80s and were joined by many of their longtime teammates, including current coach Paul Coffey. The Oilers brought out both of the franchise legends to have their names unveiled along the Wall of Fame, as well as speak to the media in a great, relaxed setting.
Plenty of Oilers fans mentioned that it was strange to see the team do the Hall of Fame induction after the game, but honestly, it was a fantastic welcome change that every NHL team should learn from.
By holding the ceremony after the game, last night's game wasn't significantly delayed on television, which is often the case with most team ceremonies. It also allowed the team to pay the proper attention to the players they were honouring, and not make it a rushed event at all. Fans had the option to stay if they wanted for the ceremony as well.
Some ceremonies like player achievements should always happen pre-game, but the Oilers made a great decision to move a lengthy Hall of Fame ceremony to the back half of the game. It's certainly a lesson that plenty of other NHL teams should take note of.
