Dave Staples of the Edmonton Journal has reported that the Edmonton Oilers may have hit the jackpot as the team may upgrade their forwards with Evander Kane potentially missing the season.
"I'll be in a much better situation coming back this time, feeling 100 percent healthy & great shape, ready to rock.»
He spoke especially of rugged forwards as it's become clear that the Oilers should add some toughness to their forward lines as the season wears on and how the playoffs usually play out.
Player the Oilers would like would model Vasili Podkolzin
Staples also explained that there's a good chance Kane could be available for the playoffs which means they could keep him on long term injury reserve and allows them to use his $5.125 million to acquire one or potentially two forwards.
The team can't completely count on Kane being ready for the playoffs, so Edmonton will need to replace some of forechecking ferocity he brings, as well as bolster the speed and hitting impact of the fourth line. - Dave Staples Edmonton Journal
The style of player they'd like to trade for would play along the lines of Oilers forward Vasili Podkolzin. He brings an edge to the Oilers forward lines and has no qualms of hitting players along with his skill set and the ability to put goals in the net.
He seems to have found himself alongside Leon Draisaitl and Viktor Arvidsson Which has worked out quite well and has been one of the best lines for the Oilers over the past several games.
But it's clear that general manager Stan Bowman will need to look for help in terms of physicality and toughness as the Oilers are currently the least hitting team in the NHL.
Many rugged forwards available at the Trade Deadline
Staples had many names available as the NHL will be littered with many middle and bottom six players as they have become the common player available at the trade deadline.
Players like Scott Laughton, Rickard Rakell and Ryan Donato could all be players that could help the Oilers break the bank or destroy their draft capital.
There are some interesting names. Who knows which of these players will be offered up at the trade deadline, but many of them will have more value to the Oilers than they do to their existing team.- Dave Staples Edmonton Journal
The Oilers are expected to be active this trade deadline with several needs including a defenseman and forwards but it's clear the team will need to upgrade their toughness and with so many available the prices may be reasonable.
