The Oilers are playing an important playoff preview game against the Los Angeles Kings tonight, and will be without two players who likely won't make Edmonton's playoff lineup: Jeff Skinner and Derek Ryan.

Trade rumours have surrounded Jeff Skinner after he's not lived up to expectations this year, this healthy scratch may expedite a move.

However, according to Oilers insider Jason Gregor, scratching Jeff Skinner seems to be more about keeping the 3rd line intact and getting ready to match the Kings physical style of play - who are also playing 11/7 tonight.

They want Janmark on the third line, so unless one of Skinner, Kapanen or Perry play fourth line C, it is Brown in for Ryan. Oilers and Kings both going 11-7.

It is one game. It seems odd to me to freak out over this and suggest Knoblauch is clueless. It is about matchups and wanting his third line intact and he wants some size.

Although Josh Brown hasn't played much, or even well with the Oilers, having an extra physical defenceman against a heavy forechecking team like Los Angeles could help the defence weather the storm.

Jeff Skinner and Derek Ryan don't fit Oilers playoff style lineup

On the other hand, Jeff Skinner and Derek Ryan just aren't bringing the talents that Knoblauch wants to see in the bottom six, especially for a playoff-type matchup.

Knoblauch appears to be looking for some physical presences, speed, and penalty killing in the bottom six - all roles that Skinner and Ryan don't fulfill.

Oilers fans can clearly see that Skinner and Ryan don't have the trust of the coach to be in big games. For that reason, it's hard to imagine them on the playoff roster.

Earlier this season, Oilers insider Kurt Leavins hinted that Jeff Skinner wouldn't waive his no move clause without a firm push from the team.

» No, the Skinner experiment in Edmonton has not gone well. But I do not expect a proud vet without a single playoff game to surrender his spot in the lineup of this team without a firm push.»

-Kurt Leavins

Back to back healthy scratches, especially in important playoff style games, may just be that push for Jeff Skinner.
