Edmonton Journal writer Jim Matheson provided status updates on Troy Stecher and Ty Emberson today.
The Oilers traded for Troy Stecher at last year's trade deadline, but he only played 7 games before he was quietly sidelined with an injury. It was later revealed that Stecher was dealing with an infected cyst that caused him great pain to even put on skates. In late May, Stecher had surgery, and has now just begun skating for the first time and ramping up for training camp next month.
Ty Emberson broke into the NHL for the first time this season with the San Jose Sharks, and posted incredibly promising results in his first 30 games. However, in a February game against the Anaheim Ducks, Emberson suffered a serious skate laceration to his foot that required surgery the same day. Emberson said to reporters earlier this year that the injury will have no effect on his offseason training, and he'll be ready to go for training camp as well.
Emberson and Stecher are both right-shot defenceman that have played top four minutes in the NHL before, and they could be playing a huge role on the Oilers this season and in the future. Stecher is signed to a two-year contract, and Emberson is a 24 year old RFA. Hopefully both players are fully healthy for the upcoming season and able to contribute the best they can.
